With mentions in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour, Entertainment Weekly, Esquire, InStyle, Marie Claire, and winning a Self magazine award for “best curly hair stylist”, as well as being voted “one of the best hair cutters in New York” by New York magazine, it’s obvious Burton Machen has made a name for himself in the beauty industry.
For the past 18 years, Machen has been styling and cutting some of the best-known tresses in the entertainment industry. His skill has allowed him to travel the world, styling for television shows and photo shoots with the likes of Sheryl Crow, Kelly Lynch, Julia Roberts, Barbara Streisand, and Vogue’ss famed editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour.
Getting his start in New York, Machen was Frederic Fekkai’s personal assistant before joining the Peter Coppola Salon. After a switch to the west coast, Machen worked at the prestigious Sally Hershberger Salon before joining Maxime’s team at Salon Maxime in Beverly Hills. An advocate for building strong relationships with his clients, Machen likes to spend time with each client and “focus on their facial features” to determine the best cut for the individual. Machen believes it is important to do what’s most flattering for his clients’ unique facial features, emphasizing natural styling, rather than pushing for whatever may be the hair trend of the moment. Machen believes, “What works for one person might not be as flattering on another.”
